Typograph matrices are recognisable by the hook on their top. It is with this hook that they hang on the rods of the Typograph.

The length of each matrix depends on its position. The more often lowercase letters are positioned in the middle of the machine, and the lesser often used letters more to the side. Then follows the punctuation. The capitals (uppercase) are positioned on the sides of the machines, and often are thicker because those letters are wider.
