This page mentions some other facts to take care about when using a typograph.
When the Typograph is operated by hand via the handle, it is advised not to cast anything. When the machine is operated to slowly, it is possible that the lead will solidify within the mouth. It then blocks casting any further slugs. When this happens, the mouth needs to be cleaned manually.
We have seen a couple of Typographs wherein the security lock did not get released, despite finding no specific problem with those machines. The cause is currently unknown.
Normally, when you allow automatic operation by pulling the handle towards you (photo 1), which lowers the first security lever (photo 2), the machine should start to run when you press the lock button on top of the machine firmly (photo 3). This button should lower another bar inside the machine (photo 4), which in turn should lift the security lock on the right downside of the machine (photo 5).
However, this lever not always gets lifted. If no security issues are found with the machine (first try turning it by hand), then the security lever can be lifted by a screwdriver (photos 6 and 7). However, don't get frightened by the machine starting to move close to your hands and keep your distance from the machine.
