In the past, asbest used to be the most used material for insulation. As such, some typecasters contain asbest. It is a very little amount to insulate the melting pots. Normally, you won't come into contact with this material, as the space with the insulation is completely sealed.
However, if the lids on the melting pot are damaged, it is recommended to seal them again, or to have the asbest replaced. Or, on some machines such as the Typograph, the lid is less refined, and should be checked more often:
The mouth on the Typograph isn't closed very well.
Replacing the asbest should be done by a specialised company. Because if it breaks, particles get into the air. The asbest should be removed completely without any particles remaining. Using a vacuum cleaner is not smart as it distributes the particles into the air. Also, provide the companies with clear instructions not to damage the wiring inside the heating pot. If they cut those wires, it is really difficult to have them repaired. The machine could be lost.
The removed asbest can be replaced by another material that is fireproof. A usefull material can be Rockwool because it bends well in the shape of the heating pot.
